What is IELTS?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a globally recognized test that measures English language proficiency. It is required by universities and immigration authorities in countries such as the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and others for non-native English speakers.
The IELTS exam is divided into four sections:
- Listening: 30 minutes
- Reading: 60 minutes
- Writing: 60 minutes
- Speaking: 11–14 minutes
There are two main types of IELTS:
- IELTS Academic: For students planning to pursue higher education.
- IELTS General Training: For migration purposes and for those who want to work or undertake training in English-speaking countries.
Why Do Pakistani Students Need IELTS?
IELTS is a key requirement for Pakistani students who wish to study, work, or migrate to English-speaking countries. Universities and colleges use the IELTS score to assess a student’s ability to understand, communicate, and succeed in academic settings.
Common Reasons for Taking IELTS:
- Study Abroad: Universities in countries like the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand require IELTS for admission.
- Visa Applications: Immigration authorities often require IELTS for visa applications, particularly for work or residency.
- Professional Registration: Certain professions, such as doctors, nurses, and engineers, may require IELTS for certification or licensing abroad.
IELTS scores are valid for two years, so planning ahead is essential.
IELTS Test Format & Scoring
The IELTS exam is structured into four parts:
Listening:
- Duration: 30 minutes
- 40 questions based on recordings (conversations, monologues, and academic topics).
Reading:
- Duration: 60 minutes
- 40 questions based on academic texts or general interest topics (depending on the test type).
Writing:
- Duration: 60 minutes
- Two tasks: one essay and one report/letter, depending on whether you’re taking IELTS Academic or General Training.
Speaking:
- Duration: 11–14 minutes
- Face-to-face interview with an examiner that tests your speaking ability.
IELTS Scoring:
The IELTS exam is scored on a band scale from 1 to 9, with 9 being the highest proficiency. You’ll receive a separate score for each section, and an overall band score will be calculated by averaging the four sections.
